According to reports, former Apple design chief Jony Ive is working with OpenAI to design and prototype a new AI device for the home. The device is expected to function like an advanced smart speaker, integrating a camera alongside microphones.

The camera would enable the device to recognize objects and faces, potentially allowing for visual queries and personalized interactions, such as making purchases through voice commands and facial recognition. This concept builds upon existing technologies like smartphone FaceID but aims to integrate them more deeply into home environments.

OpenAI acquired Ive's design firm last year, and this smart speaker-like device, anticipated to cost between $200 and $300, is one of several form factors under exploration. Another potential design is a wearable, badge-like device, though similar concepts from other companies have struggled in the market.

The development signals a shift where cameras become multifunctional AI inputs rather than tools primarily for photography, raising questions about the future focus of camera design.
