A Technical Nightmare Before the Deadline

Developing an indie game is an arduous journey, as many creators can attest. The development team behind Red Flag, a social deduction game centered on surviving an apocalypse in a bunker, recently faced a high-stakes technical failure. During the final hours before the submission deadline for June's Steam Next Fest, the team realized they had inadvertently uploaded a broken build of their game.


The situation was precarious. The submission process typically requires five to seven days for review, leaving almost no room for errors. As the team noted in a recent Reddit discussion, the crisis hit over a weekend, a time when standard Partner Support is unavailable. Desperate, the developers reached out to general Steam Support, hoping for a miracle.


The Unexpected Fix

To the team's surprise, Steam responded quickly, pushing the build for an urgent review. Within hours, the demo was approved, but with a critical caveat: the reviewer reported that the game failed to launch. The developers had misconfigured the C++ redistributable setup by opting for local DLLs rather than utilizing the Steam common redist system.


Under normal circumstances, this would have resulted in an immediate rejection, forcing the developers to fix the issue and resubmit—a process that would have certainly resulted in missing the Next Fest deadline. However, the Steam reviewer chose a different path.

We've now passed our first day of Next Fest, wishlists nearly doubled, and we're actually meeting players in our own lobby. All because Steam Support went way above and beyond.»

A Pattern of Supportive Behavior

This experience appears to be more than a one-off act of kindness. Following the developer's post, other members of the indie community shared similar stories of Valve staff stepping in to assist with technical hiccups. While such configuration fixes may be relatively simple for Valve’s team to implement, they provide invaluable relief for developers facing the immense pressure of a launch deadline.
