A New Chapter Beyond Kratos

During the latest State of Play broadcast, Sony officially pulled the curtain back on a brand-new entry in the iconic franchise: God of War Laufey. While the series has long been defined by Kratos, this upcoming PlayStation 5 title shifts the focus to his wife, Faye.

Though Faye’s character arc previously ended in earlier games, the story picks up in the afterlife of the gods, known as the "Everywhen." According to the official premise, Faye awakens in this mysterious realm only to discover that the safety nets she established for Kratos and Atreus are now in jeopardy. To protect her family, she must navigate a world filled with rival deities and volatile magic.

A Dynamic Cast and Strange Companions

The game features a compelling voice cast, with Deborah Ann Woll stepping into the role of Faye. She is joined by Jack Quaid, who voices Phranque, and Perlina Lau, who portrays a character named Rue. Phranque has already become a point of intrigue for fans; he is described as a “curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition.” Sony noted, “He will do whatever it takes to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen.”

Meanwhile, Rue is introduced as an "enchanted ribbon guardian" tasked with preventing a powerful blade from falling into malevolent hands.

Refined Combat Mechanics

Players familiar with the recent reboot of the series will recognize the foundation of God of War Laufey's combat, but with significant modifications. Sony described the gameplay approach as follows:

“Building upon the strengths of the modern God of War combat system while injecting some old school, classic DNA of the Greek era—Laufey will feel fresh, yet familiar to fans of the series.”

Faye brings a distinct style to the battlefield. Because she possesses greater mobility than Kratos, the developers have integrated new mechanics that allow for fluid transitions between ground-based strikes and aerial maneuvers. Her unique arsenal, including a powerful sword and various magical abilities, is designed to give players more offensive and defensive options against even the most formidable mythological foes.

The Future of the Franchise

In addition to this new project, Santa Monica Studio is currently occupied with a remake of the original God of War trilogy. Beyond the realm of gaming, a live-action television adaptation is currently in production with Amazon Prime Video. These developments come alongside recent industry reports indicating that a previously planned live-service God of War project was canceled in 2025.
