Shift in Development Oversight
The acclaimed James Bond title 007: First Light was entirely developed, published, and financed by Hitman creator IO Interactive. However, as the studio looks toward potential sequels for the trilogy, the landscape of production may be undergoing a significant transformation.
The project, originally revealed as Project 007 in 2020, began before Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. According to Jeff Gattis, head of Amazon Games, the tech giant did not possess full rights to First Light during its primary development cycle. However, Gattis noted that any forthcoming installments in the series would involve MGM and likely Amazon Game Studios, signaling a transition toward greater corporate oversight.
Strategic Synergy and Future Plans
IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak previously stated that his studio began working on the bond project as early as 2019, maintaining full creative and financial independence throughout the creation of First Light. The studio famously funded the project entirely through the commercial success of the Hitman: World of Assassination series.
Gattis indicated that Amazon is focused on a broader strategy of integrating media properties. He pointed to the Tomb Raider franchise as a blueprint, where Amazon is coordinating the publication of a new video game alongside the release of a television adaptation. Regarding the potential for a First Light sequel, Gattis stated:
“There is a real opportunity for Amazon to create both video content and games to foster synergy.”
Fan Sentiment and Industry Context
While the prospect of more Bond games is exciting, some fans have expressed apprehension regarding Amazon's increased involvement. This caution stems from the company's inconsistent history within the gaming industry. Despite these concerns, First Light has established a strong foundation; the title was reportedly the most costly entertainment product ever produced in Denmark, with internal funding ensuring the team retained full control.
Looking ahead, IO Interactive has confirmed it is busy with multiple projects. Beyond the potential expansion of the James Bond universe, the studio is developing a new multiplayer fantasy title supported by undisclosed partners and has expressed a long-term commitment to revisiting the Hitman series in the future.
