Performance Overview on Valve's Handheld

While expectations for the Steam Deck regarding modern, high-budget action titles have evolved, Onimusha: Way of the Sword offers a surprisingly capable performance. Unlike some recent demanding releases that struggle to run, Capcom's proprietary engine manages to keep the game in a respectable state on the handheld device.


Frame Rates and Stability

Players should manage their expectations: Onimusha typically operates between 30 and 40 frames per second (fps) on the Steam Deck. While it is possible to hit the 50–60 fps range in less intensive areas using FSR 3.1.4 upscaling, the frame rate will inevitably dip during heavy combat sequences. Consequently, locking the game to a stable 30 fps is the most reliable way to ensure a smooth, distraction-free experience.


Optimizing Visual Quality

The default graphical preset defaults to the lowest settings, but a few adjustments can enhance the visual fidelity without compromising performance:

  • Texture Quality: Increasing textures to "Medium" significantly reduces blurriness on world objects without a major performance hit.
  • Character Detail: Capcom has ensured that Musashi Miyamoto remains highly detailed, maintaining impressive cloth physics even on lower settings.
  • FSR 3.1.4 Scaling: Disabling upscaling is recommended. Although it provides a slight frame boost, the resulting ghosting effect around moving objects—particularly the character's hair—can be visually distracting.

The Verdict on Handheld Play

After testing the game for several hours, including difficult boss encounters, it is clear that Onimusha is well-suited for the Steam Deck. As the author notes:

«For my money, Onimusha is the ideal definition of Deck 'playable'. The performance isn't so impressive that I'd choose to play it handheld when my PC is sitting right there, but it's good enough that I'd happily slice up Genma from the comfort of a hotel room.»

While a high-end desktop PC offers a superior visual experience, the Steam Deck proves more than adequate for enjoying this title on the go.
