A New Way to Experience Classic GTA Titles

An innovative modder known as DryxioGTA has unveiled a groundbreaking modification that enables players to run Grand Theft Auto III (GTA 3) and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (GTA VC) directly within the game world of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The creator showcased this technical achievement in a video, demonstrating the games running smoothly on a Windows virtual machine within a macOS environment.

How the Mini-Game Mechanic Works

In the gameplay demonstration, the protagonist of San Andreas, CJ, interacts with a custom-placed television set integrated into the game world. Upon approaching the screen, players are presented with an interface to launch either GTA 3 or Vice City. Once selected, the chosen game begins to play directly on the television.

The mod offers seamless control transitions:

  • Players can toggle their active control between the main San Andreas world and the internal mini-game using the F10 key.
  • When a player is focused on the mini-game, the main environment continues to function, with NPCs behaving normally in the background.
  • The internal game remains active on the television even when the player switches their input back to the primary San Andreas character.

Recursive Gameplay: Playing Games Within Games

Taking the concept further, the developer revealed an even more impressive demonstration: a recursive setup where Vice City is played inside GTA 3, which is simultaneously running within San Andreas. In this scenario, the player navigates CJ to a screen to start GTA 3, then proceeds to find a screen within that virtual game to launch Vice City. This results in all three titles running simultaneously in a nested sandbox environment.

Legacy of the GTA Modding Community

These modifications highlight the enduring creativity of the community surrounding the franchise, which has thrived for over two decades since the original PC release of San Andreas in 2005. As the gaming public awaits the highly anticipated release of GTA 6, currently slated for November 19, interest in classic titles and the experimental mods surrounding them continues to grow.
