Setting the Stage for Limited Service

Amazon has successfully deployed another 29 satellites into low-Earth orbit, bringing its total constellation to 396 units. This milestone moves the company closer to its goal of providing restricted internet access to a select customer base before the end of the year. Chris Weber, Vice President of Business and Product for the project, stated on social media that the current satellite count is sufficient to support continuous operations across initial latitudes.

While there is significant technical work remaining—most notably maneuvering the newly launched units to their operational altitudes—the company considers its current deployment schedule on track for an initial rollout. Future missions are expected to focus primarily on expanding global coverage and enhancing network capacity.


The Competitive Landscape: Challenging Starlink

Amazon is entering a highly competitive sector that has been dominated by SpaceX’s Starlink since 2019. Currently, Starlink boasts approximately 10,000 satellites in orbit, providing services to over 150 countries and securing partnerships with numerous major airlines. In contrast, Amazon’s project is in its infancy.

The company’s initial service will be limited to US customers, with pricing and coverage area details still pending. Partnerships in the aviation sector are also in the long-term pipeline, with agreements in place to provide connectivity for JetBlue Airways starting in 2027 and Delta Air Lines in 2028.


Market Outlook and Strategic Growth

Despite the current gap in infrastructure, industry experts warn against dismissing the competitive threat posed by Amazon. According to data from Grand View Research, the satellite internet market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 15%, potentially reaching $35.7 billion by 2033.

Industry analysts, such as Hans Geerdes of CableLabs, suggest that satellite broadband represents a major disruption to traditional fixed internet providers. “I think every fixed broadband operator should be very worried,” Geerdes noted, highlighting the aggressive economic and competitive nature of space-based connectivity.


Future Deployment and Strategy

The recent launch marked the final use of the Atlas V rocket for the project. Moving forward, the company plans to utilize the Vulcan rocket, which offers a higher payload capacity and faster deployment speeds. With hundreds of satellites ready for launch in Florida, the company aims to have 7,727 satellites in orbit by 2035.

The project’s architecture relies on low-Earth orbit (LEO) positioning, typically 350 to 500 miles above the surface, to ensure faster speeds and lower infrastructure costs. Furthermore, Amazon is aggressively targeting the direct-to-device market. A key element of this strategy includes its recent investment in Globalstar, which aims to facilitate direct satellite connections for mobile devices globally.
