According to internal planning documents, the company is developing a new project codenamed "Moonraker." Unlike the standard Alexa, which handles simple queries, this initiative aims to enable complex, multi-step actions from a single vocal command, such as simultaneously booking a ride and messaging a contact. The goal is to move beyond simple task execution toward a more autonomous AI experience.


Skyrocketing Development Costs

The pursuit of these advanced capabilities comes with a heavy price tag. The "Moonraker" upgrade stands out as one of the most expensive components of the broader Alexa+ revamp. Reports indicate that Amazon has already spent over $100 million on AI chips this year alone to support the project. Internal discussions have even surfaced regarding the possibility of delaying or downsizing the initiative to rein in these ballooning expenditures, as some leaders express concern over the sustainability of current AI model operational costs.


Technical Hurdles and Erratic Behavior

The path to an AI-powered Alexa has been far from smooth. Initial testing has revealed significant "hallucinations" and accuracy issues. In one alarming report from an employee, the assistant’s inability to distinguish between specific devices led to a domestic disaster:
