A New Approach to PSU Design

At the recent Computex event, Thermaltake unveiled its latest power supply series, the Dockpower, which the company claims represents the next major evolution in power supply architecture. While the unit may look like a standard power supply at first glance, featuring capacities ranging from 750W to 1200W and modern 12V-2x6 connectivity, it harbors a unique mechanical feature.

The Detachable Dock Module

The core innovation of the Dockpower series is its detachable terminal end. By removing a single screw, users can separate the port section—referred to by Thermaltake as the “dock module”—from the main PSU chassis. This design intent is to simplify the installation process, allowing builders to attach necessary cables to the dock module before reattaching it to the PSU body, effectively bypassing the difficulty of plugging cables into cramped chassis spaces.

Thermaltake emphasizes that this module utilizes a robust, server-grade gold-plated connection, held firmly in place by a D-ring screw for tool-less tightening. According to a company representative, this is the first significant advancement in PSU design since the introduction of modular units two decades ago.

Potential Benefits and Industry Skepticism

Thermaltake positions this architecture as a leap forward, particularly regarding future-proofing and ease of upgrades. The company notes that if a user decides to upgrade their power supply, they could theoretically swap the main unit while leaving the dock module and cable configuration intact, potentially saving time on complex cable management.

However, industry observers have raised questions regarding the practical utility of the design. While the module aims to reduce assembly frustration, some argue that standard modular PSUs already allow for pre-attaching cables before installation. Furthermore, the longevity and convenience of swapping a PSU versus simply performing occasional cable maintenance remain subjects of debate.

Market Availability

Despite the skepticism, Thermaltake’s initiative serves as a bold attempt to inject novelty into a component category often defined by standard, utilitarian designs. The PC building community will be able to judge the effectiveness of this system firsthand when the Dockpower series—comprising the FS, FC, and FI models—officially hits the market this September.
