New Flexibility for iPhone Users
With the upcoming release of iOS 27, Apple is introducing a functional feature known as iPhone Handoff. This innovation allows users to utilize the same eSIM phone number across two distinct devices. Initially, the rollout is limited to T-Mobile subscribers in the United States and Deutsche Telekom clients in Germany.
The Cost of Connectivity
Despite the utility of the service, T-Mobile has confirmed that customers will need to pay an extra $5 per month to enable this functionality. It is important to clarify that while the feature offers convenience, the connected iPhones cannot operate simultaneously under the same number. Instead, users can designate which device is active and toggle between them as needed.
Seamless Integration and Synchronization
When switching devices, the user’s communication ecosystem migrates automatically. This includes:
- Voice calls and voicemail
- Text messages
- Find My functionality
Furthermore, iCloud data and third-party application information remain synchronized across all connected hardware, ensuring a consistent user experience regardless of the device in hand.
Configuration and Requirements
To activate iPhone Handoff, users can navigate through the Settings menu on their current device or during the initial setup process of a new handset. The process involves selecting the Cellular menu, choosing 'Set up Cellular' or 'Add eSIM,' and following the 'Transfer' prompts. Once completed, users simply unlock the desired device, and a notification reading «Switched to this iPhone» will verify that the number is now active on that specific unit.
For the feature to function, both pieces of hardware must be linked to the same Apple ID and operating on iOS 27, which is scheduled for public release on September 14.
