A New Chapter in Mobile Cinematography

Following its initial unveiling at MWC, Honor has confirmed that its groundbreaking AI-powered smartphone—famously dubbed the 'Robot Phone'—will be commercially released later this year. While the device boasts a sleek, ultra-thin aesthetic with minimal bezels, its defining feature is a unique, protruding gimbal camera system.

Engineering the Mechanical Gimbal

The device integrates a four-degrees-of-freedom (4DoF) gimbal, powered by a sophisticated micro-motor that folds neatly into the handset's rear panel. To maintain a slim 7mm profile, Honor’s engineers developed a micro-motor roughly 70% smaller than standard industry components. The mechanical assembly utilizes high-performance titanium and steel alloys, leveraging structural expertise previously refined during the development of the Magic V6 foldable hinge.

Despite the engineering marvel, industry analysts remain cautious. Concerns persist regarding the structural integrity of the mechanical arm and its vulnerability to daily wear, as well as the practical challenges of carrying such a device in a pocket.

Strategic Partnership with ARRI

The project represents a high-profile collaboration between Honor and ARRI, a legendary name in professional cinematography. This marks the first time that ARRI’s proprietary image science has been adapted for a consumer smartphone, focusing on natural color grading and cinema-grade light handling.

David Bermbach, Managing Director at ARRI, stated:

«Today, consumer smartphones have already become a serious tool in professional filmmaking... That’s why we believe it is time to bring these worlds even closer together.»

The device leverages a 200MP sensor calibrated to enhance skin tone accuracy and depth of field, bridging the gap between professional cinema equipment and mobile photography.

Release Schedule and Availability

Honor has officially slated the launch of this high-concept device for Q3 of 2026, targeting a release window between July and September. Initially, the phone will be available exclusively in China. A global rollout will depend on domestic market reception and overall consumer demand.
