A New Sonic Direction for Rayman

During the recent PlayStation State of Play event, it was officially revealed that Rayman Legends, the beloved 2013 platforming classic, is receiving a comprehensive 3D remake titled Rayman Legends Retold. Beyond the visual overhaul, the project boasts a revamped soundtrack featuring a collaboration between the original series composer, Christophe Héral, and industry icon Grant Kirkhope.

Kirkhope, celebrated for his legendary work on classic titles such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, continues to be a prominent figure in the industry, contributing to modern hits like A Hat in Time and Yooka-Laylee.

Perfect Alignment with the Franchise's Tone

In a discussion regarding the development of the remake, production director Alessandro Arndt Mucchi highlighted why Kirkhope was the ideal choice for the project:

«I think Kirkhope is very in line with the humorous tone that we have in Rayman. He really gets that. If you look at the past history of his previous compositions and games he worked on, I think he has that feeling.»

Mucchi also praised the professional chemistry between the two lead musicians, noting that the combination of Héral’s original vision and Kirkhope’s fresh contributions has resulted in a brilliant new musical landscape for the game.

Remarkable Speed and Efficiency

For animation director Marco Renso, working alongside a composer of Kirkhope's caliber has been an eye-opening experience, particularly regarding the speed of the creative process:

  • Unmatched Efficiency: Renso noted that Kirkhope produces high-quality results in an incredibly short timeframe.
  • Instant Turnaround: According to the animation lead, the composer frequently returns with incredible musical themes just a day after receiving a brief.
  • Consistent Quality: Despite the rapid pace, Renso expressed that the caliber of the work remains consistently outstanding.

Renso concluded by noting that while the speed is clearly a product of immense talent, the entire development team remains consistently impressed by how effectively Kirkhope captures the essence of the game through his music.
