The Foldable Market Evolution
As the tech industry approaches the anticipated pre-order date for Apple’s iPhone Duo, the landscape of foldable smartphones continues to shift. While Apple is only just entering the space, Android manufacturers—most notably Samsung—have been refining this form factor since the debut of the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. This significant head start has not gone unnoticed by the Android community, with Samsung even poking fun at Apple’s late arrival following its recent hardware event.
During a recent discussion, Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, shared his perspective on the competition. Reflecting on the industry's trajectory, Samat stated:
«I think that it's wonderful to see more people realizing after so long that the foldable space is the place to be. And Android is usually where you see the future first.»
The Android Advantage
Samat, who frequently utilizes the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 for his professional tasks, emphasizes that Android has long been the testing ground for this innovative form factor. He notes that the Z Fold 8 serves as a highly efficient tool for productivity, often acting as the starting point for his workflow before he transitions to a laptop.
Despite Apple's late start, market analysts at Counterpoint Research project that the tech giant could capture 25% of the foldable market within its first year, potentially climbing to 40% by 2027. This anticipated growth is largely attributed to the strength of the Apple ecosystem, which keeps many users loyal even when they express interest in hardware innovations found elsewhere.
Looking Toward a Shared Future
Rather than viewing the iPhone Duo as a direct threat, Samat believes Apple’s participation will act as a catalyst for the entire industry. By validating the foldable form factor, Apple is expected to increase overall consumer interest, which could ultimately benefit Android devices as well.
A significant hurdle remains: software optimization. Apple is making a concerted effort to encourage developers to adapt their applications for larger, foldable displays. While some apps on Android still struggle with scaling, Samat remains optimistic about the progress being made:
- Google continues to work closely with developers to simplify the creation process.
- Thousands of apps have already been fully optimized for the foldable experience, including Google’s own suite like Gmail and YouTube.
- Third-party platforms, such as TikTok, already provide a highly refined, immersive experience on devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Ultimately, Samat views the expansion of the foldable market as a positive development for all stakeholders.
«We can cherry pick an app or two that one platform will have or the other platform will have, but the reality is this form factor is a hit. It's growing. It was growing even before these last couple weeks, and I'm glad to see more people joining what is now the obvious party,»he concluded.
