The collaboration between French audio giant Focal and its sister company, Naim Audio, has produced some impressive results. While the previously released Mu-so Hekla was recognized as a significant achievement, the newly unveiled Naim Mu-so Utopia aims to elevate that partnership to unprecedented levels of acoustic performance and luxury.
Design and Build
Positioned as an uncompromising evolution of the Mu-so line, the Utopia features the familiar aesthetic language established by its predecessors. It boasts a brushed, black anodized aluminum chassis highlighted by a distinctive red trim running across its 40cm length. However, users should note its substantial presence: weighing approximately 14kg, it requires a sturdy surface and adequate space, particularly if integrated into a home cinema setup where placement relative to the TV is crucial.
The system retains the signature illuminated dial on the top, which serves as a tactile control for volume, input selection, and power management.
Technical Specifications and Connectivity
Beneath the surface, the Utopia is a powerhouse, delivering 720 watts of combined Class D and A/B amplification. It utilizes 15 drive units designed to fill rooms up to 50m² with immersive sound. Notably, the system incorporates twin 25mm 'PRISM' tweeters derived from Focal’s flagship Scala and Diva Utopia ranges, powered by Class A/B amplification for enhanced precision in high-frequency reproduction.
Connectivity options are robust, featuring:
- HDMI eARC for home theater integration
- Optical input
- RCA output for external subwoofer pairing
- Ethernet port for network stability
Streaming capabilities are extensive, supporting Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, and Bluetooth 5.3. Furthermore, the unit supports hi-res audio up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD128, with integrated Dolby Atmos functionality.
Performance and Sound Calibration
Our initial evaluations, conducted at facilities in both the UK and France, suggest a system of remarkable scale. Whether handling cinematic explosions or the delicate textures of vocal tracks, the Utopia demonstrates an ability to maintain spatial accuracy and clarity. The inclusion of Focal's 'ADAPT' (Adaptive Acoustic Personal Tuning) technology allows the system to analyze room dimensions and calibrate the output accordingly via the dedicated Focal & Naim app.
«The Utopia's ability to fill a 50m² test room without breaking stride is remarkable, particularly in how it manages directional audio during demanding film sequences.»
While early impressions are largely positive, highlighting the system's blend of power and detail, we did observe slight hardness in the mid-to-upper ranges during high-volume testing of specific tracks. Further long-term testing will be required to determine if this can be mitigated through proper running-in and placement.
Initial Verdict
With a launch price of £4499 / $5500, the Mu-so Utopia enters the market at a significant premium. It is clearly designed for those seeking a singular, high-performance solution that functions as a soundbar, streaming hub, and hi-fi system. While we wait for a comprehensive, long-term review in our own facilities, the combination of Focal’s acoustic engineering and Naim’s amplification pedigree suggests this is a system with significant potential.
