A Pivot in Strategy for Facepunch Studios
Following a rocky launch in April that was marred by declining player engagement, negative feedback, and an influx of low-quality, AI-generated content, Facepunch Studios is implementing significant changes to its Garry’s Mod successor, s&box. Creator Garry Newman has acknowledged the platform's shortcomings and is shifting the company's development philosophy.
Shifting Focus: From Engine to Player Experience
Newman recently admitted that the team had become too preoccupied with the technical backend of the platform. "Our focus has been on the engine and the development experience. That's what we love, that's what turns us on—but we're not selling an engine, we're selling a game," he stated. Consequently, the team is pivoting toward enhancing the core sandbox experience by introducing more vehicles, NPCs, and customization options to better serve the players.
Rethinking Content Discovery
One of the primary criticisms of the platform was the overwhelming number of poor-quality user-generated games, which Newman described bluntly as a "ton of shit games." He acknowledged that his initial vision for the platform was flawed:
«My idea of a Netflix for games doesn't work. It's not feasible. It's not how people discover games. You can't land people on a menu of 60 games and say, 'have fun'.»
To combat this, the studio is moving away from an automated approach to content. Future additions to the Play Fund will now require an application process to filter out "clickers, idlers, and slop." Furthermore, the team has already begun removing low-quality assets to raise the overall standard of the platform.
Major Updates Ahead
Looking toward the future, the platform is set to become free-to-play before the end of 2026. Early adopters who previously paid for access will be compensated with exclusive Steam inventory items. Additionally, the platform is updating its visual identity; the iconic "Terry" sausage character model is being retired in favor of more traditional human character models to modernize the game's aesthetic.
Whether these updates will restore the community's trust and capture the chaotic magic of the original Garry's Mod remains to be seen. However, by moving toward human-led curation, Facepunch is finally addressing the quality control issues that have hindered s&box since its debut.
