Amazon has officially entered the premium tablet arena with the launch of the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. Marking a significant departure from its history of budget-focused Fire tablets, the company describes this new release as the most substantial advancement in its tablet development to date, positioning it as a direct competitor to high-end devices like the iPad Air.

A Major Strategic Shift

The transition is not just in hardware; Amazon has dropped the "Fire" branding and, significantly, has moved away from Fire OS. The new Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the first in the company's lineup to support the full Android ecosystem, granting users native access to the Google Play Store and essential apps such as YouTube, Gmail, and Google Maps.

Eric Saarnio, Vice President of Amazon Devices International, emphasized the significance of this move:

«Without a doubt, this is the biggest leap we've ever made in developing tablets in our history. And I'm incredibly excited about what the team has built.»

High-Performance Hardware and AI Integration

The new lineup includes the 12-inch Pro model, alongside 11-inch and 8-inch versions. The flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is designed for power users, featuring:

  • A 12-inch, 120Hz display with optional anti-glare Nanomatte technology.
  • Up to 16GB of RAM.
  • Substantial improvements in CPU performance compared to previous Amazon tablets.

A standout feature is the deep integration of "Alexa+," Amazon’s cloud-based AI assistant. Unlike a standard app, Alexa+ is baked into the operating system, allowing it to provide context-aware assistance by analyzing on-screen content with user permission. The service is free for Prime members, while others can access it via a monthly subscription.

Focus on Productivity and Versatility

Amazon aims to balance entertainment with productivity. The tablets include a specialized "Kindle mode," which optimizes the screen for reading by minimizing blue light, silencing notifications, and extending battery life. According to Saarnio, the goal is to provide a device that doesn't force users to compromise between media consumption and getting work done.

Market Positioning and Pricing

With a starting price of £499.99 ($549.99), the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro undercuts premium competitors significantly. For instance, it offers a larger screen and a higher 120Hz refresh rate compared to the current entry-level 11-inch iPad Air, creating a compelling value proposition for those within the Android ecosystem.

While the company is transitioning toward premium hardware, it maintains a tiered lineup to cater to different budgets. Pre-orders for the new range are currently open, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 19.
